Published Tuesday May 09 2017

11 May 2017 marks the 150th anniversary of the signing of the Second Treaty of London in 1867. As a result of this treaty which reaffirmed Luxembourg’s neutral status, the Prussian garrison left Luxembourg, and the city’s fortifications were dismantled, marking the start of the Grand Duchy’s transformation into an open and modern nation.

Representatives of original signatory states, namely Germany, Austria, Belgium, France, the United Kingdom, Hungary, Italy, the Netherlands, and Russia, will join in the commemoration of the signing of the treaty. As part of the official programme, TTRRHH the Crown Prince and Crown Princess of Luxembourg, together with Prime Minister Xavier Bettel, Mars Di Bartolomeo, President of the Chamber of Deputies, and Lydie Polfer, Mayor of Luxembourg City, will accompany visiting dignitaries to the new exhibition at the Luxembourg City Museum entitled “The Luxembourg Story – More than 1000 years of Urban History.” The programme will also feature the opening of the exhibition “1867. Luxembourg – ville ouverte” at the Musée Dräi Eechelen .
