Luxembourg’s Minister of Foreign and European Affairs, Jean Asselborn, participated in the London Conference on Afghanistan that took place on 4 December 2014. The conference was co-hosted by both the British and Afghan governments.
The President of Afghanistan, Ashraf Ghani, and the Chief Executive of Afghanistan, Abdullah Abdullah, attended the Conference which aimed to address the various political, social and economic challenges currently facing Afghanistan, as well as discussing different strategies to ensure the country’s future stability.
Minister Asselborn welcomed the formation of a national unity government and reaffirmed Luxembourg’s long-term commitment to Afghanistan as well as Luxembourg’s willingness to work together with Afghanistan’s new government and international partners in order to protect the progress made in Afghanistan since 2001. Luxembourg’s commitment is exemplified by its annual contribution of 4 million euros to the ANA Trust Fund until 2017. The Luxembourg government will also continue to support the humanitarian efforts by UN agencies.
Minister Asselborn concluded his statement by calling on the Afghan authorities to make a clear and unequivocal commitment to protecting human rights, especially with regard to those women and children affected by armed conflict.
