Xavier Bettel, Etienne Schneider and Jean Asselborn attended the NATO Summit in Wales

Luxembourg was represented by Prime Minister Xavier Bettel, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defence, Etienne Schneider, as well as Foreign Minister Jean Asselborn at the NATO Summit in Newport from 4th-5th September 2014.
The 28 members of the Alliance held a meeting on Afghanistan’s future as well as the NATO-Ukraine Commission. The strengthening support of the Armed Forces and of new partnerships as well as tackling new threats in order to respond to the increasing threats are among the topics of the second day of the Summit that reunites the Heads of State or Government, Foreign Ministers and Ministers of Defense of the NATO members.
With his colleagues Heads of Government, Prime Minister Xavier Bettel attended a NATO debate on the current strategic challenges East and South of the Alliance while Foreign Minister Jean Asselborn and his colleagues were looking at the means to confront the diplomatic challenges set by the situation in the Ukraine. Deputy Prime Minister Etienne Schneider and the Ministers of Defence examined the options open to NATO to confront asymmetric threats.
Prime Minister Bettel declared on the occasion of the adoption of the transatlantic declaration ‘that an alliance able to guarantee our security and values must be based on a strong transatlantic relation that will develop and take into account the evolution of our security environment’.
