The Luxembourg Fortress: grandeur, fall and renaissance - a lecture by Patrick Sanavia at Luxembourg House
On 6 June 2013, Mr Patrick Sanavia will be giving a lecture entitled The Luxembourg Fortress: grandeur, fall and renaissance. The Examples of the Rham Plateau and Fort Thüngen.
The Luxembourg fortress started as a castle on the Bock outcrop in the 10th century. It subsequently expanded to become one of the most impressive fortresses in Northern Europe. The greatest military engineers, such as Vauban, contributed to its development which reached its apogee in the 19th century. As part of a comprehensive agreement under the Treaty of London of 1867, the fortress was dismantled. In recent years, efforts have been made to rebuild parts of the fortress.
Mr Sanavia is the director of the Luxembourg National Heritage Office (Service des sites et monuments nationaux) whose key mission is to preserve the built heritage of Luxembourg. This office is currently in charge of more than 100 projects on more than sixty sites including feudal castles, fortifications and religious and industrial heritage.
